Capt Spaulding Foundation

The foundation to a house belonging to a Captain Spaulding is located just west of Old King’s Highway on the Loop Trail in the Horse Hill Nature Preserve

Very little is known of exactly who Captain Spaulding was, or the exact date of the house’s habitation, although an 1858 map hanging in the lower level entrance to Town Hall indicates that it was inhabited at that time. Although the house itself is long gone with only foundation stones remaining, Lilacs continue to grow around the edge of the house site, as do Honeysuckles, Hawthorns and ‘Niagara’ Grapes.

The site was cleared of encroaching trees in 2005 and is being carefully watched for further evidence of mid 18th century farm life.
