Why do I have to register my dog?
State of New Hampshire RSA 466:1 requires that all owners of dogs four months and older shall annually cause it to be registered, numbered, described, and licensed for the city or town in which the dog is kept. The license is valid from May 1st of each year to April 30th of the subsequent year.
Per State law, owners must present a valid rabies certificate and a neutering or spaying certificate, if applicable.
Veterinarians are required by State law to notify the town clerk when a rabies vaccination is issued. When this occurs, a notice to license your dog will be issued from this office if your dog is not already licensed.
For your convenience, you may use the Dog License Registration Form to license your dog by mail. The form can be found by clicking on the link at the bottom of page.
Fees for licenses are:
- Puppy (ages 4-7 months) $7.50
- Neutered or spayed dog $7.50
- Un-neutered/spayed dog $10.00
Senior citizens, aged 65 or older, may register one dog at a discounted price of $3.00. Proof of age must be provided the first time the discount is given. First time discounts can not be given for on-line transactions.
What happens if I don't license my dog?
Failure to license your dog is a violation of State law. Owners who fail to register their dog by May 1st, will be subject to fines and a court summons.
Late charges are assessed at $1.00 per month, per dog. Civil forfeiture fines will also be assessed in the amount of $30.00 per dog, which will be payable within 15 days of receipt of the notice of failure to register. Failure to pay late charges and civil forfeiture fees within the 15 day period will result in a summons to appear in court.
What do I do if I no longer own my dog?
Contact the Town Clerk's office at 424-3651 or email Diane Trippett or Linda Hall and we will update your record so that you do not receive any further notices.
How do I license a dog that is new to me?
You should license the dog as soon as possible. Your license will be valid from the time of licensing until April 30. You will need to provide a valid rabies certificate and/or a neuter/spay certifiate if applicable. You may license in person or complete a dog license registration form (link at bottom of page) and mail this with a copy of any applicable forms and the licensing fee.
