The Point System

The Point System in New Hampshire is designed to classify drivers according to their particular traffic violation convictions. The Department of Safety uses the Point System in the suspension and revocation of license for those who have a specified number of accumulated "points" on their driving record.

6 Points:

RSA 263:64 Driving after suspension / revocation

RSA 265:4 Disobeying a Police Officer

RSA 265:82 Driving While Intoxicated

Aggravated DWI RSA 265:82-a

Reckless Operation RSA 265:79

4 Points:

RSA 263:1 Driving Without a License

RSA 265:18/20 Unlawful Passing

RSA 265:22 Highway markings (Yellow Line Violation)

RSA 265:60 Speed (more than 25 mph over the Posted Speed Limit)

3 Points:

RSA 265:9 Failure to Obey Traffic Control Devices

RSA 265:31 Failure to Obey Stop / Yield signs

RSA 265:60 Speed (less than 25 mph over the Posted Speed Limit)

2 Points

RSA 261:40 Unregistered vehicle

RSA 263:30 Driving a motorcycle without a motorcycle license

1 Point:

RSA 263:35 Failure to Obtain a New Hampshire Driver's License

The following are the periods of suspension associated with age:

Under 18 Years Old:

6 points within 1 year = 3 months loss of license

12 points within 2 years = 6 months loss of license

18 points within 3 years = 1 year revocation of license

18 to 20 Years of age:

9 points within 1 year = 3 months loss of license

15 points within 2 years = 6 months loss of license

21 points within 3 years = 1 year revocation of license

Over 20 years of age:

12 points within 1 year = 3 months loss of license

18 points within 2 years = 6 months loss of license

24 points within 3 years = 1 year revocation of license
