Youth Operator's License

In order to safeguard the youth of Merrimack, The Merrimack Police Department adheres to a "zero-tolerance" policy of handling Youth Operators found violating the provisions of the new "Youth Operator's License" restrictions enacted on 1 January 1998. Youth Operators are those persons who received a license after January 1, 1998, and are under 20 years of age.

According to RSA 263:14, a Youth Operator's License will be issued to an applicant who has provided the Director of Motor Vehicles with written consent from the applicant's parent or legal guardian, and has successfully completed a driver education course and provides a certificate of course completion.

Any person who possesses a Youth Operator's License, and is under the age of 18, shall not operate a motor vehicle between 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. The Youth Operator will not operate a motor vehicle where the number of occupants exceeds the number of safety restraints in the vehicle.

During the first 6 months after issuance of the license, the holder of a youth operator's license shall not operate a motor vehicle with more than one passenger less than 25 years of age who is not a member of the holder's family unless accompanied by a licensed responsible adult who is at least 25 years of age.

Violation of this statute, shall subject the violator to a fine of up to $100 and a loss of license of up to 30 days for a first offense. For a second offense, the violator can be fined up to $200, and lose their license for up to 90 days.
